PRODUCTION PROCESS:
Production starts at the quarry. Large rectangular blocks, averaging 40’ x 35’ x 14’, are freed from the solid granite using modern quarrying methods. This large block is then broken into smaller blocks averaging 10’ x 5’ x 3.5’ that can be removed by cranes and loaded onto trucks.
Once delivered to the manufacturing plant, the blocks are sawed into slabs of the desired widths (typically 4”, 6”, 8”, 12”, 15”, and 17”) needed for the various products. The slabs are then broken or sawed into the desired products and finished according to the order.
GRADES OF STONE:
We offer a “landscape” grade of Savannah Gray that will include some natural features found in the Elberton Granite. These features include streaks (pegmatites, less than 2.0” thick), waves (lighter areas with indefinite boundaries), and small inclusions (xenoliths) of the rock into which the granite intruded. These features do not affect the structural integrity of the stone, and add character to it. This grade is used to make curbing, rubble, cobblestones, and veneer strips. It can be used in all our products if the customer so desires.
For applications where the landscape grade is not suitable, we offer a monumental grade stone that may contain some “waves” but no streaks or inclusions. When inquiring about products, please let us know which grade of Savannah Gray your project requires.
Elberton, Georgia, is known as the “Granite Capital of the World” and is probably the biggest hub for monumental production in the United States. In addition to our Savannah Gray, we have access to all the domestic dimensional granites and marbles, as well as most of the imported varieties. Please contact us for availability.
Cobblestones are sold by the piece, but the quantity is figured by the square feet required. They are available “tumbled” or un-tumbled. Tumbling is a process that rounds the corners and edges of the cobbles and gives them a weathered appearance. All the cobbles will have 2 sawed sides and 4 split sides. For an additional cost, a thermal finish is available one sawed side.
Below are some of the standard size cobbles available, the number of pieces per square foot, and the number of pieces per ton (2000 lbs.). Custom sizes are available, but dimensions are subject to the natural splitting properties of the stone. New cobbles are light gray in appearance but will age and darken when exposed to the elements. Minimum order is 25 on the standard sizes. Call or email for current pricing. Cobbles are delivered in bags or on pallets.
4” x 4” x 4”: 9 pcs./sq. ft. 310 pcs./ ton 6.1 lbs. each
8” x 4” x 4”: 4.5 pcs./sq. ft. 155 pcs./ton 12.4 lbs. each
9” x 5” x 4”: 3.17 pcs./sq. ft. 115 pcs./ton 17.67 lbs. each
10” x 7” x 4”: 2.1 pcs./sq. ft. 70 pcs./ton 27.0 lbs. each
9” x 5” x 2.25”: 3.17 pcs./sq. ft. 175 pcs./ton 10.04 lbs. each
Curbing is sold by the linear foot in straight pieces and curved pieces (radius). Straight curbing comes in random lengths, but can be cut to specific lengths for an additional cost. Depending on the radius needed, radial curbing averages about twice the cost of straight curbing per linear foot. For complex radius curbing, we recommend our design and templating service. For an additional fee, templates ensure the project will fit together correctly, making installation easier. We offer Type “A” curbing and Type “B” curbing.
These are the standard sizes offered and they are plus or minus 1”:
4” x 12”; 4” x 16”; and 4”x 18”
5” x 12”; 5” x 16”; and 5” x 18”
6” x 12”; 6” x 16; 6” x 18”; 6” x 20”; and 6” x 24
Custom sizes are available but are limited to the natural splitting properties of the granite. Minimum order is 10 linear feet. Tops can be rock pitched, heat treated (thermal), sandblasted, or any combination thereof. Call or email for current pricing. Delivery is typically on a flatbed truck.
Products include, but are not limited to steps, wall caps, benches, posts, fireplace mantles, window sills, step landings, counter tops, millstones, retaining walls, fountains, and sinks. Finishes include sawed, thermal, rock pitched, sandblasted, or polished. Typically these items are sold by the linear foot, and prices will differ based on the required finishes. Wide pieces, such as a countertops or step landings are priced by the square foot. Benches, fountains, and sinks are priced by the unit. Lengths and widths of these products are limited by the capability of the quarry to produce the size blocks needed. Contact us with questions on availability.
Complex shapes can be sawed on our contour wire saw, so please contact us if you need an unusual product. We enjoy the challenge of bringing your ideas to life in our beautiful Savannah Gray, or other granite of your choice.
Rubble is split granite in various thicknesses and rectangular shapes. It is sold by the ton. Typically it is used for walls or rough walking surfaces. Our “outdoor” rubble varies in thickness from 4-8” and the rectangular shapes vary. Our “indoor” rubble is more uniform and offers consistent sizing. The pieces are all the same thickness, and the widths are typically 4, 6”, 8”, 10”, and 12”. “Indoor” rubble requires more production time than “outdoor” rubble and as a result has a higher per ton price. Minimum order is 1 ton. Typically delivered on a dump truck, but small quantities can be palletized. We are unable to bag rubble because the sharp corners will cut the bags. Call or email for current pricing.
Pavers are sold by the square foot. Typically 1” to 2” thick, the four sides are sawed at right angles, and the top has a thermal or sandblasted finish. Minimum order is 25 square feet. Call or email for current pricing. Pavers are delivered on pallets or in bags.
Veneer strips are pieces of granite split to the desired width in varying even heights of 4”, 6”, 8”, 10”, 12”, & 16”. The strips can be split on the site to the desired lengths. Delivered on a flatbed truck in random lengths. Minimum order is 1 ton.
